Classes: Creating Suspense

Course Title: Hands-on Fiction
Course description: Do you have a story that needs work? Did you get stuck on your way to finishing a novel? Are you looking to sharpen your fiction in the company of other writers? This class will combine instructor talks, and small group and one on one editing in a focused and supportive atmosphere. Students will submit a story or chapter prior to the start of the class and class discussion topics will be drawn from student works in progress.

Suspense is an important element of any great story – fiction or non-fiction, literary or genre, short story or novel. In this course we will learn to recognize those elements that build tension and keep your readers flipping pages. We will give your suspense-building muscles a workout that will help take your story to the next level.

Instructor Bio


Deryn Collier grew up in Ottawa and Montreal and is a graduate of McGill University. After a very short career as a federal bureaucrat she ran away to the mountains of BC where she has been ever since. She has worked in a log yard, a brewery, as a doctor recruiter and a communications consultant.

Deryn’s first novel, Confined Space was shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award for best unpublished first crime novel by the Crime Writers of Canada. It will be published in Canada by Simon & Schuster in June 2012.

Deryn lives in Nelson, BC with her family and blogs about crime fiction and life in the mountains.
