Learn the Art of Shibori

Learn the Art of Shibori – Indigo Dying Techniques at Oxygen Art Centre

On October 28 & 29 fibre artist Seathra Bell will be demystifying the art of the Shibori indigo dying technique at Oxygen Art Centre.

Seathra Bell was born and raised in the Slocan Valley, has a diploma from KSA, BFA from Alberta College of Art & Design and a Masters in fashion and textiles from Goldsmiths, Scotland. Seathra creates one-of-a-kind garments that involve felting, knitting, dying and sewing and is currently involved in a research project investigating traditional natural dye plants of Columbia Basin First Nations. Seathra divides her time between teaching, costuming for film, and working from her home studio near Nelson.

“This is the first time Oxygen Art Centre has offered a Shibori – indigo dying workshop” says Oxygen’s Education Coordinator Natasha Smith “it is wonderful to be able to feature home-grown talent and give the community the opportunity to learn from a professional in this field.”

For those that came to the last exhibit at Oxygen, Summoning (no words), the whole space was transformed using lengths of material that had been dyed using the Shibori technique. Shibori comes from the Japanese word shiboru, a term for methods of dyeing cloth that involves binding, folding, twisting and compressing. The earliest known example of Shibori using Indigo dye dates back to the 8th century in Japan.
“I am excited to teach Shibori and Indigo dyeing at Oxygen.” says Seathra. “This traditional technique is exquisitely simple and complex at once and offers so much potential for contemporary artists and designers to create beautiful cloth. As one of my favourite natural dyes, I look forward to sharing the inspiring alchemy of the indigo vat!”
