Art Speak is an opportunity to meet other artists and discuss artworks created within a common theme. It is a weekly challenge to listen, think, observe, elaborate, and commit to the creative process. Whatever skill level or medium used, the group supports an intimate space where all feels included, connected, respected, and excited to share courageous exploration.

Note: This is the second iteration of Art Speak during the spring semester. Attendance in the first part is *not* required.

Collaging with personal photos

Create a meaningful collage using personal photographs and mixed media materials.

We will use photographs (photocopies of the photos can also be used), images from magazines, art books, and paint to create a collage. These collages are a beautiful way to commemorate a lost loved one or to honor an individual or a relationship.

Printmaking Workshop

This four-week workshop introduces the fundamentals of lino printing, covering key techniques such as design, carving, inking, and printing. Students will be guided through the process while being encouraged to develop and print their own ideas. With individual support throughout, participants will produce final prints and develop a solid foundation in lino printing.

Drawing from the Spring Garden

Join us as we slow down and savour the beauty of a curated selection of seasonal flora and foliage, freshly gathered from the artist’s garden. This relaxed drawing class is open to all levels and will give you the chance to reconnect with the present moment, the beauty of the subject and your creative self. Each session the instructor will focus on using a different drawing medium (e.g. pen & ink, willow charcoal, oil pastels). Students invited to match mediums or bring whatever inspires them in the moment. There will be simple demos to start, followed by free drawing time.

Lino printing-reduction technique
Instructor: Myra Rasmussen
Structure: 1 class
Date: Saturday, May 30, 2026
Time: 10:00am-4:00pm (1 hr lunch break)
Fee: $120.00

In this class students will use one lino block and print it multiple times, carving a bit away each time. Through this process we will create a print with multiple colours, each layer over top the previous one. This class is appropriate for all skill levels, whether you have experience with relief printing or if this will be your first time.

Life Drawing /part two/

Participants will draw from a professional model in a studio setting. Poses will typically begin with short (2-minute poses) for quick gestural studies and work up through increments to longer (15-20 minute) poses. No instruction is offered. Participants will bring materials for the drawing medium of their choice.

Colour & Composition: Bringing Still-Life to Life

Dive into a fun day of painting that celebrates colour, dynamic composition, and playful experimentation. This one-day studio workshop focuses on still life painting with acrylics, exploring playful object arrangements and strong focal points to create engaging, eye-catching artworks.

Drawing from Nature – Local Parks Series

Have you ever wanted to slow down and spend a bit more time admiring, observing and even drawing the beautiful flora and fauna growing in our city’s parks? This series will take us to three local parks to draw en plein air (outdoors). Suitable for beginner and intermediate drawing skill levels, you are encouraged to work in whatever drawing medium you are currently inspired by. Each session will include some drawing demos, free drawing time, and time to share our drawings, learn and be inspired by each other.

Participants will be expected to set-up travel to and from each park location (Note: this series is not held at Oxygen Art Centre.)

Locations include: Lakeside park, Gyro park, and Cottonwood park.

Be Not Afeared: A Poetry Workshop for Beginners (Online)

Curious about how to read and write poetry but find poetry intimidating or cryptic? Has the myth that poetry is only for the “elite” stopped you from taking a poetry class?

Together, we will de-mystify reading and writing poetry, delight in language play, have fun creating poems collaboratively, and most importantly discover that poetry is a gift for everyone.

This class is held online via Zoom. An internet connection and device are required to attend. Contact Oxygen if you need additional supports to participate. Open to all ages.

The Art of Submission: Submitting Creative Writing to Periodicals (Online)

Fee: $100.00

You have a body of work, new poems or stories, and it’s starting to look like a book manuscript. The next step is to submit to literary periodicals so book publishers will take you seriously. Learn how to edit, research magazines and competitions, write a bio, the importance of a headshot, make friends with Submittable, use a submission tracker, and most importantly, to not give up! It’s a numbers game and not that hard to learn.

This class is held online via Zoom. An internet connection and device are required to attend. Contact Oxygen if you need additional supports to participate.

☆ Refunds will be issued to students who withdraw 14 days prior to the first scheduled class. 

☆ Refunds will not be issued once the class is announced to run. In specific circumstances, partial refunds or credits will be issued.

As a non-profit artist-run centre we rely on minimum registration to pay professional artist instructor rates and to ensure enough time for instructors and staff to prepare for your class.
