Drawing with the World in Mind with Deborah Thompson
ONLINE
6 Classes: Oct 6 & 8, 13 & 15, 20 & 22
Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm
Course Description:
Drawing with the world in mind is an online drawing course designed to enliven our resiliency and creativity as we move through challenging times. The COVID-19 Global Pandemic has highlighted a long list of global problems; climate change, homelessness, opioid crisis, racism, classism and more. Leaning into a creative practice during these times is helpful in developing meaningful insights and in cultivating imaginative ways to give constructive shape to the future.
With the
world in mind this course will focus on the communicative power of art through drawing exercises. Drawing proposes new approaches for one to be curious in a way that celebrates and expands our knowledge of how we live our lives. This course will offer a series of drawing exercises building on one another that include: experiments with drawing mediums, demonstrations in drawing fundamentals, explorations in drawing from objects, still life, photographs, memory, and imagination. Homework will focus on projects such as creating metaphor and composing dreams. Slide show presentations and discussions, one on one critiques, and sharing as a group will also be part of the course.

Modern correspondence through Email, Twitter, and texting provides efficient communication but the old-fashioned letter was a tool that connected us as human beings. Come re-discover the gifts of a powerful literary form.
Using great literary epistles as inspiration, we will craft imaginary letters and postcards to enliven our fictious stories. We will also use the letter as a tool for personal exploration by writing and sending letters of gratitude (to people in our immediate lives and from our past), letters that cannot be sent but must be written (to the deceased, to those we can’t forgive), and time capsule letters to be opened only in the future or after our lifetime.
Materials will be provided but it is encouraged to bring your favourite pens and stationary.
