Thursday June 25th from 1pm-2pm, OR 5pm-6pm

Shannon Cooney, artist in residence at Oxygen arts Centre, is researching for a new dance/performance work. Her practice questions time, action and space as the frame for a performance narrative. As well as how to expand the pleasure experienced in vision.

It would be a great support if any interested people could join her in the Oxygen Arts studio for a one-hour session. In this time you will be welcomed, and given the chance to participate in a simple activity, and then invited to view a short dance sequence. You will then be asked to give directed feedback, in the form of answering a series of questions. Please sign up via Email, mail-to@shannoncooney.org or SMS 1(647) 862-2439

This research will go towards a production in Berlin, Germany in 2016, working title: Moveable Cinema.

About the Residency

As Oxygen’s artist in residence for the month of June, Shannon Cooney will be working on the creation of a solo dance installation.  Her intention is to use the residency to explore a new process, one that emphasizes the inclusion of everyday interactions and  responses of the residency environment to effect the creation of a new dance.  This could include the involvement of other people, spaces, sounds and objects, in what Cooney calls “extending reciprocity”.  Allowing these spontaneous and random interactions to influence the shape and composition her choreography.  In writing about her process, Cooney states that I have no desire to create drama, rather (I wish to) emphasis intimacy and proximity and their effect on shaping the piece.  The process will also include some “trial performances” which Cooney feels are vital for the growth of the larger work.  In the end, the work done during the residency will be part of a on going project which includes a group of international performers.

Cooney is a Canadian artist who is currently based in Berlin, Germany.  She studied dance at York University in Toronto and since graduating in 1992 has worked in Canada, Europe and the U.K. Multi-talented, she has participated in dance improvisations, exhibited her videos, worked as an artistic director, a choreographer and an artistic advisor.  This summer, she will be taking part in the Canada Dance Festival held in Ottawa.  Cooney is an internationally recognized choreographer, dancer and dance educator whose innovative and expressive approach will bring much to offer the Nelson dance and extended community this summer.

As part of her residency Cooney will be offering a dance workshop, giving an artist talk and performing for the city council at their June 15th public meeting at 7pm. Her talk will be on Thursday June 4th at 7pm at the Oxygen Art Centre.  Her workshop will be the following weekend – June 6th and 7th at the Moving Centre on Baker Street (*no experience required).  For more information about the workshop scroll down.  To register contact Robyn Birdsong at 250-551-0484 or email: robyn.birdsong@gmail.com

Workshop: Dynamic Expansion dance and movement practice with Shannon Cooney

*no experience required

The dance practice Dynamic Expansion, created by Shannon Cooney dancer, choreographer and craniosacral practitioner, is based in connecting with the physical phenomenon of the Craniosacral (C/S) system with movement and dance via improvisational forms.

In the workshop participants are introduced to techniques to tune into this profound rhythm and go directly and deeply into this calm, dynamic, self-witnessing. The techniques taught incorporate natural, fully physical, energetic, and subtle dance/movements that are guided into improvisations.  More info please go to Shannon Cooney’s website.
