The Magic of Marbling onto Fabric with Natalie Purschwitz – WORKSHOP IS FULL
Oxygen Art Centre is pleased to present a workshop in the ancient art of marbling by Vancouver based artist Natalie Purschwitz. Dating back to 12th Century Japan, the ancient craft of marbling has amazed artists all around the world with its magical process of swirling inks, dyes and paints on a liquid surface to produce beautiful, organic patterns. For hundreds of years throughout Asia, the Mediterranean and across Europe, marbling has been used to create original artworks, endpages for books and colourful patterns for textiles. According to Purschwitz, there is a perfect balance between control and unpredictability in the process that is undeniably addictive. Every new piece is both a surprise and an accomplishment.

This workshop explores the ancient tradition of marbling, a process by which paints and inks are floated on a liquid size and transferred onto fabric or paper resulting in fluid, colourful patterns. Over the course of two days, you will learn how to prepare the fabric, prepare the size, make marbling combs and tools, and of course, experience the magic of making original artworks on fabric.
Natalie Purschwitz is an interdisciplinary artist based in Vancouver, BC. Her work seeks out spaces between art, design, performance and daily life. Her curiosities include anthropology, the notion of survival, clothing as a type of cultural production, language and mythology. Natalie shows her artwork internationally, designs costumes for a wide range of productions and maintains a small clothing line called Hunt & Gather. She has studied at the University of Calgary (BA, Archaeology) the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Art and Science (NY, NY) and Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design (BFA, Media Arts). In 2012 she was a recipient of the Canada Council for the Arts International Residency award in Paris, France. Natalie grew up in Radium Hot Springs, a small town in the East Kootenays.
