Play and Play-making! Clown and theatre for young people with Marya Folinsbee

This class is for young people interested in clown and theatre performance, creation, and writing. Together we will do acting and clown exercises, collaboratively create short performances, and explore introductory playwriting skills. Participants will come away from the class with new performance skills and tools, as well as their own new material, and hopefully we’ll share some of our performance/writing with the community at the end of our time together!

Students are encouraged to bring a snack and a water bottle.

Marya Folinsbee is a clown, actor, playwright, and teaching artist from Edmonton/Amiskwaciy Waskahikan, who now lives in the Slocan Valley/Sinixt Territory, in the West Kootenays. Marya studied theatre at the Victoria School of the Arts and McMaster University, and independently with artists including David Diamond (Theatre for Living), Jon Davison (London Clown School), Deanna Fleysher (Don’t Call it Clown), and others. Writing credits include “In Transit” (Nextfest 2001); “Be/Longing” (2018, co-written with Martina Avis); and “Domesticated Disputes (2020). Select acting credits include Peter in Peter Pan; Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream; Moon in The Real Inspector Hound; Le Geographe and Le Renard in Le Petit Prince; and Constance Ledbelly in Goodnight Desdemona (Goodmorning Juliet). Manga Drawing Workshop with Zen Wang

Learn basic techniques for Manga comic style drawing! During the first session we will do exercises to improve our skills in anatomy, faces, hair, clothing, posture, composition. During the second session we will work on designing a manga poster for your own character. Students can take home the poster to remind them of the new skills they’ve learned in the workshop. 

Students are encouraged to bring a snack and a water bottle, and their existing Manga drawings to the class.

Class structure: 2 classes; Weekend; Saturday, March 22, 2025 & Sunday, March 23, 2025
Time: Afternoons, 1 – 4pm
Age range: 11-17 
Fee: $150

Deadline to register: Wednesday, March 12, 2025

Material requirement: Students should have the following: pencils, erasers, watercolour brushes and paint, a watercolour paper pad (8.5X11 minimum), Pen and ink set.  Soft pencils and shaders are useful but not mandatory. 

Zen Wang is an artist with many talents. He has been working as an Art Director and Assistant Art Director in the TV and Film industry for the past nine years. His artwork can be seen in many TV shows and movies on Netflix, Apple TV, Disney, Prime, Kanopy and more. His sculptures have been selected for the Castlegar Sculpture Walk for three years in a row. He has illustrated children’s books and fantasy novels. He is currently working with a local talent on a graphic novel called Deep. For the last two years Zen has been teaching Digital Art at Selkirk College. 

 ☆ Minimum registration is required to run this class. Students will be notified in advance if the class will run as planned. 

☆ Refunds will be issued to students who withdraw 10 days prior to the first scheduled class. 

☆ Refunds will not be issued once the class is announced to run. In specific circumstances, partial refunds or credits will be issued.

As a non-profit artist-run centre we rely on minimum registration to pay professional artist instructor rates and to ensure enough time for instructors and staff to prepare for your class.
