Idea-land: Making Friends with the Muse with Kelly Shpeley

A course in idea-making. What to do when you have creative stagnation, and need to break up old patterns of thinking to come up with fresh ideas.

Pencil to Paper with Deborah Thompson

Course Description:
Loved for its immediacy and depth of expression, drawing is the foundation of visual thinking and artistic development. This 6-week course focuses on drawing as a traditional and contemporary practice. Drawing exercises that build on the fundamentals of drawing such as form, value, shape and space will be part of each class. We will explore drawing from a variety of sources, including some life model time. The use of colour in drawing will be introduced. Participants will work from still life, photographs, and their imaginations to create more complex self-directed drawings. Ongoing feedback and group discussions will be part of each class. Students with any level of drawing experience are welcome to join the class.

Clown Play, Practice and Performance with Marya Folinsbee

Course Description:
The clown is a universal archetypal character, channeling trickster taboos and the provocative divine! In this class we will tap into our clown personas in order to develop “turns”, or short clown performances. Activities include improvisational theatre and movement, costume and make-up creation, story-telling/story-building, and wild self-exploration. No previous experience necessary, but those with experience very welcome too! This work supports performers, artists, parents, and anyone plagued by seriousness.

Singing Beyond the Blues with Bessie Wapp

The follow-up to Bessie’s popular Singing The Blues, this course is for returning students wanting to build their skills and, of course, sing with a live band of top Nelson musicians. Includes 6 group classes plus one private lesson.

Low-Tech Printmaking Part II with Natasha Smith

Course Description:
This course is designed for students that have basic printmaking experience. Students will be encouraged to create larger, more complex printmaking plates and explore a variety of printing techniques, including jigsaw and multi-plate printing.

Beginners Brush 2 with Deborah Thompson
2-day workshop: Feb 9 & 10
Saturday & Sunday 12 pm – 5 pm
Course Description:
This two-day weekend workshop is designed as a continuation of Beginner’s Brush 1. The course will focus on aspects of colour theory which will then be applied to various painting exercises. On the first day, we will look at complimentary colour mixing and how colour effects the creation of space. On the second day, we will explore the creation of texture with colour and value contrasts. Exercises, group critiques and discussions will be an ongoing part of the weekend. A slide show to study how artists throughout history have used colour will be part of each day. Anyone who has an interest in learning to paint or extending their knowledge of painting is welcome.

Beginner Instrumental Ukulele with Catherine McGrath
5 Classes: Feb. 10 – March 17 (no class on Feb 17)

Course Description:
The course is an introduction to playing melodies (as opposed to just chords) on the ukulele. We will look at a couple of easy major scales and some very simple melodies with backing chords. Students should already be proficient playing a fair number of chords (at least 8) in steady rhythm.

Writing Memoir 1 with Rayya Liebich

Course Description:

Memoir is making a comeback and in this class we will explore why this genre is necessary in our times and how we can craft our own stories to make the most impact. Classes include guided writing prompts, inspiration and techniques by famous memoirists, and the time and space to dig up the truths that want to be written. Bring your courage and pen. All skill levels and life experience welcome.

Course Description:
Topics covered in this one-day workshop will be what (not) to include in a proposal, where to apply and how to write an artist statement. Activities will include in-class writing and discussion. Participants may submit an example of an exhibition proposal and five images (max.) with their registration and receive feedback on it at the workshop. Or may come without a proposal and learn how to write the best artist statement ever.

Course Description:
Oxygen Art Centre offers a Masterclass in Critical Writing on Art led by visiting arts writer and scholar, Tracy Valcourt of Montreal, March 8-10. Valcourt will begin the weekend with a public lecture Friday, March 8 at 7 PM at Oxygen Art Centre. On Saturday, March 9th, Valcourt will hold a writing workshop followed by one-on-one consultations. There will be opportunities for studio visits with Valcourt on Sunday, for a small additional fee. Participants’ art writing sample could be critical writing about another artist’s work (meant for print or online publication) or writing about one’s own work i.e. artist and project statements. Participants will be notified of requirements upon registration for the workshop. Enrolment is limited for the workshop and studio visits, so register early.

An Introduction to Clown Play and Theatre with Marya Folinsbee

Course Description:
A whirlwind day of playful exercises to help you step into your inner clown. Explore the dynamic, weird and transformative world of clown theatre, where we tap into our silliness, curious wonder, and taboo-smashing impulses. Activities will include improvisational movement and theatre games, playful self-expression, and archetypal story-building and story-telling, with the help of a little red nose. This is a short, introductory course that will give you a taste of how to explore the clown realm. Suitable for performers, parents, and anyone who takes themselves too seriously.

Writing Memoir 2: Piecing Together the Puzzle with Rayya Liebich

Course Description:
Delve deeper into the stories you uncovered in Writing Memoir 1 and tighten your craft, learn how to effectively revise and edit, and explore how to pull together the pieces into a body of work. Peer feedback, teacher mentorship, take-home tools and inspirational reading each session.

Collage Painting with Natasha Smith
4-day workshop: April 1 – 4

Course Description:
Learn how to create interesting surfaces using a diverse range of materials and then combine painterly techniques to create colourful textural paintings. Students will investigate colour and composition and discover how to collage, paint and photo transfer on panels, boards and alternative surfaces. A wide range of acrylic mediums and techniques will be explored including acrylic pours. This is a process-based course with experimentation at its heart.

Creating a Series: Drawing and Painting Workshop with Deborah Thompson

Course Description:
This studio-based workshop will offer participants an opportunity to concentrate on the creation of a series of paintings and /or drawings towards the development of a body of work. The curriculum will include exploring the relationship between painting and drawing. Group drawing exercises will introduce participants to processes that can be used to explore an image or theme. Some exercises will work on enhancing the understanding of the fundamentals of light on form, the creation of pictorial space and the gathering of visual information. These ideas will be transferred into a series of paintings and or drawings that have personal meaning to the student. Demonstrations and application of colour theory will be part of each day, as will critiques, discussions and slide presentations.

Trick Films: Shooting and processing 16mm film with Brian Lye
2-day Masterclass: April 13 – 14

Course Description:
The masterclass, taught by artist Brian Lye, teaches hands on shooting and processing of 16mm film along with a film historical look at early cinema’s trick films. Participants will shoot on a bolex camera and process their film with Caffenol-C, a process using instant coffee, vitamin c, and washing soda. There will be a free public presentation of Brian Lye’s work and artistic process on Friday April 12th at 7:00pm.

SUMMER INTENSIVES
Working with Colour with Patrick McGoey

Course Description:
Learn how to enhance your work with colour and avoid over blending plus create depth. For many artists painting is about colour, it is about emotion, storytelling and to delight the eye of your viewer. In this colour intensive course you will learn how to mix any colour utilizing a limited palette. We will cover the basics of what makes a great painting including composition and tonal value and students will develop their personal colour strategy. It is about the paint, practical use of your paints and lots of practice. After this intensive you will buy fewer colours and create harmonized rich paintings.

Art of Activism with Jan Inglis

Course Description:
This workshop focuses on how arts can animate and amplify social change efforts through public engagement, critical analysis of community issues, team building, creative thinking, as well as bringing in fun when advocacy gets boring. Masks, movement, voice, writing etc. are used to explore motivations, assumptions, contexts, archetypes, and stereotypes. Hands-on learning of basic tools for creating characters and props using foam, papier mache, paint, and fabric may culminate in co-developing a street worthy event.

Zero to Sixty: Ukulele Intensive with Catherine McGrath
5-day Workshop: Aug. 12-16
Mon. – Fri. 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Course Description:
The course is designed for people who have no or little experience playing ukulele and will begin with the very basics – how to tune, hold, and strum the ukulele – followed by the introduction of two simple chords and a number of catchy two-chord songs. Additional chords will be added gradually and song complexity will increase. The course will also cover a variety of strumming patterns and some very basic and useful music theory.
