Beginner’s Brush 1: Introduction to Painting with Deborah Thompson

ONLINE

4 Classes: Feb. 4, 11, 18 & 25

Thursdays 1 – 4 pm

Course Description:

This series of 4 classes is a great opportunity to discover painting. We will begin at the beginning! Students will be introduced to the basic concepts of painting through demonstrations and hands-on-the-brush exercises using paint. Students will explore the medium of (acrylic) paint on a two-dimensional surface as it relates to mark, value, texture, colour, and both conventional and non-conventional approaches will be presented. Ongoing feedback and illuminated referencing of key artists throughout history will be a part of each class.

Designing for Fashion and Wearable Art with Seathra Bell

Introduction to Colour Theory with Deborah Thompson

2 Classes: Feb. 13 & 14

Saturday & Sunday 12 – 4 pm

Course Description:

This 2-day course will focus on the foundations of colour theory. During the course we will look at seven ways that colour can be used to create contrasts such as value, saturation, hue, warm/cool (temperature), proportion, luminosity, and complementary pairs. We will also look at how colour occupies and creates spatial relationships. Mostly, we will play in the world of colour! The course will be taught in acrylic paints and theories introduced will be applied to painting exercises. Demonstrations, hands-on mixing, and application of paint, accompanied by slide presentations will be used to convey the ideas of colour theory. Students will develop an eye for the sometimes subtle and always dynamic nature of colour! This course is applicable to artists working in any medium and all ability levels welcome.

Mapping Memory: Collaging a Personal History with Natasha Smith

In this 4-week class students will cut and paste and map personal memories and visually share personal experiences, histories, and stories. We will explore the elements and principles of design using collected readymade materials including personal memorabilia to create intriguing and meaningful collage compositions on wooden panels.

Be Not Afeard: A Poetry Workshop for Beginners with Rayya Liebich

Curious about how to read and write poetry but find poetry intimidating or cryptic? Has the myth that poetry is only for the “elite” stopped you from taking a poetry class?

Tapping the Poetic Unconscious with Rayya Liebich

Course Description:

For one day, let your inner critic take a long nap and give the right side of your brain permission to play on the page. Through a series of guided writing prompts we will tap into our unconscious minds and dig up the jewels hiding in our imaginations. Drawing from  Liz Gilbert’s Big Magic, Austin Kleon’s Newspaper Blackout, and Natalie Goldberg’s techniques of entering sideways, we will write a series of new poems and come away with  take-home tools and insights to awaken our unconscious in our everyday lives.

Sonic Imaginaries 2: Voice, Performance and Creative Composition with prOphecy sun

Course Description:

This online studio course surveys the diverse ways sound is implemented as a creative expression in contemporary art practices, installations, soundwalks, public art, theatre, live performance and musical production. Each week explores the crucial role sound plays in the everyday and how it emerges as a strategy to generate new experiences. Throughout the sessions students work both independently and collectively with DIY tools and other prompts to build and produce a series of experimental sound compositions. Also included are guest speakers who will discuss processes and approaches to sound creation.
All levels of experience and creative backgrounds are welcome.

April Poetry Challenge: 30 Days, 30 Poems! with Rayya Liebich

Course Description:
NaPoWriMo, or National Poetry Writing Month, is an annual challenge in which participating poets attempt to write a poem a day for the month of April.  Join this movement with extra support by receiving a daily poetry prompt in your inbox and meeting once a week online for two hours with instructor Rayya Liebich. During online sessions we will discuss elements of the craft, take turns giving and receiving feedback, and share inspirations. Always more fun, and less daunting, in good company. Take the challenge, the world needs more poetry!

Reading and Writing Rilke with Susan Andrews Grace

Course Description:
Reading and Writing Rilke will employ close reading of Rainer Marie Rilke’s poetry as inception for the participants’ own composition. There will be exploration of sound, rhythm, image, and mystery/soul in Rilke. Each class will involve reading, discussion, writing prompts, and a deep dive into writing.

Abstract Collage Painting with Natasha Smith

4 Classes: Apr. 8, 15, 22, 29
Thursdays 5:30 – 7:30 pm

Course Description:
In this 4-week online course students will learn two different approaches to creating abstract collage paintings on wooden panels. Using various compounds, acrylic mediums, textured collage materials and paint, students will learn how to use the elements of art with particular attention to physical texture and surface building to create complex, intricate abstract designs. This is a hands-on, process-based course for artists of every level.
