Painting Intensive: Painting On Another Level! with Natasha Smith
4 classes March 12 – 15 1 – 5pm Monday-Thursday
Course Description: This intensive course is designed for painters that want to take their paintings to another level, literally! Recycle unfinished/unsuccessful paintings by collaging papers, fabric, natural materials and various found materials, and build textured, exciting new surfaces to your paintings. Break down conventions, loosen your style, and be daring yet playful. We will explore alternative techniques for collaging and applying paint and building interesting surfaces, while learning about the various acrylic mediums and applications. Basic painting skills are a pre-requisite for this course.

Writing Through Doubt with Susan Andrews Grace
4 classes: April 3 – April 24 5.30 pm – 8.30 pm Tuesdays
Course Description: Writing Through Doubt is a cross-discipline seminar for writers and visual artists who wish to resolve issues of doubt in their creative process. It will include reading handouts, exercises, in-class writing, and discussion. This is suitable for the beginner as well as the more established writer or artist. Those with a manuscript or a body of work in progress may bring samples for discussion, if they wish.

FLASH Writing with Rayya Liebich
4 classes: April 4 – 25 10am – 12pm Wednesdays
Course Description: Explore the fun and trendy genre of flash fiction, which is defined as a story under 1,000 words. Also known as “short shorts,” “sudden fiction”, “postcard fiction,” or “pocket fiction”, short writing is a wonderful way to tighten your craft and to pay attention to every detail in your writing and editing. We will practice writing both fiction and non-fiction and read several examples by famous authors to draw inspiration and insight. New and returning students welcome!

Pencil to Paper with Deborah Thompson
6 classes: April 4 – May 9 5.30 pm – 8.30 pm Wednesdays
Course Description: The emphasis of the course will be on the development of visual expression through drawing. The development of a foundation of drawing skills from modeling of an object in variety of light conditions to working with an object in space will be integral to the course. Students will build their drawings from a variety of sources including photographs, still life objects, the figure and their imaginations. An exploration of a variety of drawing materials will be part of the course. The use of colour in drawing will be introduced as part of an exploration on narrative drawing. Some previous drawing experience is necessary to take the course.

Harmony Singing with Bessie Wapp
8 classes: April 5 – May 23 7 pm – 9 pm Thursdays
(Last class performance on Wednesday May 23 location TBA)
Course Description: There’s nothing like singing in harmony! But how do people do it? This class will explore why some notes work together better than others (basic music theory), why vowels are so important, and we’ll do lots of singing! We’ll practice holding a part while others sing something else, learn several harmony pieces in different styles, create vocal grooves, and play!

Weekend Workshop – Beginner’s Brush 3 with Deborah Thompson
2 days: April 7 & 8 12 pm – 5 pm Saturday and Sunday
Course Description: This two-day weekend workshop is a continuation of Beginner’s Brush 1 & 2 and is open to anyone who has some basic painting experience. The course will focus on aspects of colour theory and its use in the creation of a painting. The exercises and projects will also explore composition, which will include the creation of space, working with balance and visual weight, notions of formal emphasis and ways to unify the painting. On-going discussions and critiques will enhance students learning and slide shows of various artist’s work will assist in illustrating concepts worked on that day.

Folk Band 2.0 with Catherine McGrath
6 classes: April 8 – May 13 6.30 pm – 8.30 pm Sundays
Course description: Folk Band 2.0 is designed for students who have either taken Folk Band Basics or who already have some familiarity with the major and minor pentatonic scales and their use in basic improvisation. The class will explore further applications of techniques learned in the first class as well as investigate the standard blues scale, intro’s, endings, fills, riffs, and more complicated chord progressions.

Visual Storytelling – Mixed Media Explorations with Natasha Smith
6 classes: April 9 – May 14 5.30 pm – 8.30 pm Mondays
Course Description: Expand your visual language, uncover personal symbols and create visual stories using collage, painting and assemblage/shadow box making techniques. This process-based course has experimentation at its heart! Intuitive image development exercises will help unlock symbols and ideas, while students learn how to create interesting compositions using a variety of materials. Students will be encouraged to explore freely and develop their own visual stories that can take the form of collage paintings, shadow box or small sculptural/assemblage works. All levels welcome.

Art as Soul Medicine with Gabriel Keczan
5 classes: April 15 – May 13 2 pm – 5 pm Sundays
Course Description: An arts-based group therapy series to explore spontaneous art making. A chance to play with your creativity; paint your dreams and make meaning out of life in a way that supports personal healing and integration. Participants will play with visual art materials; be with what arises; and hold the process in a safe and supportive group setting as it relates to each artist’s personal journey. No previous art experience required.
Course fee: $200 Material fee: $50 (for assortment of paints, pastels, paper, scissors, glue and brushes) + Participants should bring a journal, writing implement and are welcome to bring whatever extra materials they would like to use.
