BIBO and Oxygen Art Centre present Bent Light, an Experimental Film Collective from Winnipeg

BiBO Nelson is a restaurant that frequently presents interesting visual art and live music, but on the 16^th of September BiBO will expand that list to include Expanded Cinema and Experimental Film.

What is Expanded Cinema? You may well ask … in short Expanded Cinema is a performance that uses light images, lenses, mirrors and homemade contraptions to create a film right in front of your eyes.

New work from Bent Light, a Winnipeg based experimental film collective, is being toured across Western Canada as part of an initiative of the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council. The films will be screened and performed at BiBO by Andrew John Milne, a founding member of the collective and sole proprietor of the Museum of New Ideas.

The work includes several short experimental films including Underwater Birthday Party for Fish by Mike Maryniuk,  All Sparks by Heidi Phillips, and First Light by Leslie Supnet.  There are two Performances: Moonflower and Other Witchweeds created by Doreen Girard and Xerographic, a wooden machine that projects a film from a stack of 8.5×11 photocopies constructed and performed by Andrew John Milne.

The entire program runs for about an hour and a half with breaks to catch your breath.

The Bent Light is a collective of 5 artist innovators that illuminate forgotten futures and technological mythologies from the broken machinery of an unrealized cinema. We share a commitment to reunite experience and imagination through ingenuity, creativity and lo-fi accessibility.

New Work & Western Canadian Tour

The Bent Light Collective has received funding from the Canada Council for the Arts and the BC Arts Council to fulfill a commission to create new work and tour it across Western Canada. The program of new work will feature 16mm, hand processing, found footage, photocopier cinematography, DIY projectors and expanded cinema performances.

Beginning in Vancouver, the collective will be presented by Cineworks as part of SWARM September 11th and 12th 2014. The tour will then head east across the country in a mobile exhibition space called the Museum of New Ideas. Presentations planned in Nelson, Lethbridge, Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Regina and Winnipeg.

Title: Underwater Birthday Party for Fish
Description: All is right underwater until an unexpected party crasher arrives. Using found footage, 16mm, animation and underwater camera footage.

Title: All Sparks
Description: Light explodes out of the darkness in All Sparks, a frantic array of film loops created by Heidi Phillips.

Leslie Supnet
Title: First Light
Description: The imagined rise and fall of many suns. Using animated drawings and shot on 16.
Type: Single Channel Film
Format: 16mm

Doreen Girard
Title: Moonflower and Other Witchweeds
Description: Compiled materials and images of flora from nature walks, botanical illustrations and time-lapse video are manipulated and added to within a live setting and knit together with multi-directional light sources. Reels of screen printed acetate are advanced by hand through a home-made projector. Score by Winnipeg experimental voice artist, Rosa Reaper.

Andrew John Milne

Title: Xerographic

Description: A Xerox copier has been modified to function as an instant print camera. Strapped into the passenger seat of a travelling museum, this copier will document the 36 hour drive at 30 second intervals from Winnipeg to Vancouver resulting in 2000 Xerox copies.

But how would it be possible to re-animate the 8.5 x 11 images? Xerographic: a hand build 4ft high paper sheet feeding and dispensing praxinoscope. Take a journey into the alternate future of instant imaging.
