Oxygen_SpringArtCamp_webPlease join us for Oxygen Art Centre’s Spring Break Art Camps!  These week-long camps for children ages 5-7 or 8-10 years old, will explore the wonderful world of art through mixed media projects including drawing, painting, drama, collage, assemblage and found art.

On the last day of camp we invite family and friends to join us for a little party and show & tell in the last half an hour of camp, and peruse all the work the children made during camp.

The morning group, ages 5-7, will work with artists and educators Teresa Segstro and Sophia Mitchell and the afternoon group, ages 8-10, with Martina Avis, Will Parker and Sophia Mitchell.

INSTRUCTOR BIOS:

TERESA SEGSTRO

Teresa Segstro has owned her own preschool and fostered a love of art with the young children she teaches for the past 30 years. She has taken several adult classes through Oxygen Art Centre, and enjoys exploring art herself.  She believes every child is an artist and we just need to nurture them. Come explore collaging, water color painting and mixed media.

SOPHIA MITCHELL

Sophia Mitchell  is a visual artist who dedicates her practice to fusing themes of spirituality with naturalistic figure painting. She enjoys exploring the human form and portraiture has been the center of her practice for the last several years. Her subjects are inspired by personal experience that has deeply moved her: this includes connecting to other humans, questioning Buddhist and Hindu philosophies regarding energy, souls, and spirits, impermanence and the inevitability of death. Aesthetically, she enjoys realism because it turns the creation process into a meditation on how to see the present moment truthfully. She grew up in Vancouver and Nelson and moved to Montreal in 2009, where she completed her B.F.A. in Studio Art at Concordia University. While in Montreal she exhibited her work in several galleries including Galerie Onze, The Montreal Art Center and Sunshine Gallery. Since then Sophia has recently moved back to Nelson to explore new artistic projects. She works out of her studio at 560 Baker Street, Suite 7. You may view her work at www.sophiajmitchell.com.

WILL PARKER

Will Parker, BA Psychology, Masters in Environmental Studies, is currently completing the Provincial Instructor Diploma Program and works with the Kutenai Art Therapy Institute. He currently does Eco-art making, leadership training, and environmental education with young people. In his workshops, making art with natural materials and found objects is used as a way to tell stories about our interaction with nature and society. Will considers making art a way to strengthen connections to society and the natural world.

A note from Art Camp founder – Anita Levesque
Art is essential. It connects us and brings great joy to our lives. By making and creating, we become problem solvers, exercising both sides of our brains. It is a celebration of beauty, a mode to express what is deep within, and a tool to better understand our place in the world.

That which is most essential is often overlooked and taken for granted. The arts are under represented in our schools and communities today. Understanding the importance of art education for our children and youth has been the core inspiration behind our children’s art programming over the past three years. It is with great joy that we see this program growing and becoming a consistent and reliable way for parents to enrich their child’s lives through art.

Thank you to all of you that have been a part of this journey, so far. We look forward to seeing even more smiles and excitement on children’s and parent’s faces as our program develops.

Anita Levesque, on behalf of Oxygen Art Centre
